Goal
On Giving Tuesday, help stop the attack on the natural world buried in Budget Bill 229.
For $5.00, help us reach thousands more people before the December 8th deadline.
Bill 229 rolls back environmental protections for irreplaceable wildlife, forests and wetlands. This is happening at a time when we’re facing three interrelated crises – a pandemic, a climate emergency and a biodiversity crisis. It is reckless and short-sighted. Bold and courageous actions are required to chart a new and different future. Not omnibus budget bills that set aside the public’s rights to be involved in decision making and weaken environmental laws.
Bill 229’s proposed changes to conservation authorities introduces new rights for developers to force fast-tracking of development approvals while narrowing the mandate of conservation authorities to protect the environment making a watershed wide approach next to impossible.
Bill 229’s proposed changes for forestry include a permanent exemption for forestry from protecting and recovering endangered species. If passed it would prevent the Minister of Environment, Conservation and Parks from ever issuing a species protection order or habitat protection order for any forest operations conducted as per the exemption.
