Together We Are Stronger
Introduction
I served with the British Army and completed a tour of duty in Kosovo during the ethnic cleansing that took place in 1999. As a veteran and long term sufferer with PTSD, I enjoy being outdoors and hiking through the countryside. Being outdoors helps with my mental health, and helps me to manage my PTSD which I’ve been suffering silently for over 19 years until I finally reached out and spoke about my condition. I have joined forces with Phoenix Heroes who help & support veterans who suffer from PTSD like myself to raise much needed funds to enable them to continue providing the much needed services that they do.
96 miles over 7 days carrying excess weight
The Route
The Cause
We are doing this in aid of Phoenix Heroes, a small non-profit Community Interest Company based in Colchester Essex providing PTSD support to veterans and their families, over a period of 18 months they have helped over 100 veterans get their lives back on track. They really do need all of the support that they can get to continue with their support services, all too often do the smaller good causes get left behind. Their team is made up of veterans, family and friends with one of the most respected former SAS legends as their Ambassador, Mark "Billy" Billingham Ch4 SAS Who Dares Wins.
The Challenge
In September this year we will be hiking the West Highland Way in Scotland, over seven days covering 96 Miles from Milngavie to Fort William. This will include wild camping, challenging terrain and blisters! The team is made up of veterans and friends from around the UK. We will be carrying weight shared across the team with our 7 day supplies and camping equipment, this coupled with the arduous terrain will make it difficult on the mind and body. Not only will this event raise much needed funds for Phoenix Heroes it will also be good for the wellbeing of all those taking part, being out in the open is a great heeler for mental health. The team will get to bond and share experiences, camp through the night and hopefully have a laugh over the seven days.
Your Help
There are several ways that you can help, a donation would be very much appreciated but if you can share our event with your family, friends and social network that would be a great help too. If you are a business and see an opportunity where you can support by way of donating hiking equipment or supplies then this would also be much appreciated. We are looking for corporate sponsors for this event and we are happy to promote your own business throughout our journey. Monies raised against this event will be used in support of Phoenix Heroes outdoor activity projects.
Taking Part
There is still time to take part in this event, if you have the right mindset for a challenge and would like to join the team then please contact Phoenix Heroes.
