Este año 2024 va a ser muy importante en la vida de Diego y queremos empezarlo anunciando una campaña de concienciación, solidaridad y ayuda dando a conocer el trabajo de la Fundación WWOX y la lucha de las familias que la formamos.
El 16 de febrero es el día de concienciación sobre WWOX y nos comprometemos a caminar 16 millas durante el mes de febrero. Camina con nosotros por Diego y todos los pequeños guerreros de WWOX en todo el mundo este febrero.
Si no tienes los medios para caminar o correr, no dudes en unirte a nosotros como puedas, ya sea manteniendo un objetivo de pasos en el trabajo o comprometiéndote a pasar una hora al aire libre tomando aire fresco o cualquier otra cosa. ¡Usa nuestros colores (naranja y azul) cuando puedas, publica una foto y comparte nuestra historia!
Diego ha cumplido 5 años. Tras sufrir episodios de ausencias y convulsiones epilépticas, al poco de cumplir su primer año, conocimos su diagnóstico de Síndrome de Woree. Hasta llegar a esa terrible sentencia pasamos por una buena serie de análisis y pruebas médicas que ya habíamos empezado al detectar un retardo en alcanzar hitos físicos en sus primeros meses. Medicación y neurológos aparte, la vida de Diego empieza por la mañana estando escolarizado en el Centro de Educación Especial AMENCER - ASPACE Pontevedra, donde un maravilloso equipo interdisciplinar de profesoras, logopedas, fisioterapeutas y personal auxiliar desarrollan cada día de forma personalizada y adaptativa las capacidades de Diego. Todo lo que podamos decir sobre todos y cada uno de ellos es poco, tanto a nivel profesional como personal, y tanto para Diego como para nosotros como familia.
De vuelta a casa, toca merienda y actividad de tarde, con Palala, su fisioterapeuta desde que tenía unos pocos meses y una gran ayuda y guía en momentos complicados. Fueron años muy duros a nivel familiar, que siguen siendo exigentes, sacrificados y extenuantes, la incertidumbre de afrontar algo desconocido es muy complicado. Afortunadamente para Diego, tenemos una familia que nos ayuda y complementa en su educación y crecimiento tanto con él como con su hermano Dani. Todo sería mucho más difícil sin cada uno de ellos, cada uno en su faceta.
La investigación iniciada por la Fundación WWOX suponía una pequeña esperanza para llegar a conocer algo más de este síndrome tan raro, pero que una empresa farmacéutica como Mahzi Therapeutics se interesase para desarrollar una terapia genética es algo que, aún sabiendo lo complicado que es todo el proceso, atisba a todas las familias un horizonte en el que se pueda producir un ensayo clínico que mejore las condiciones futuras de nuestros hijos. La colaboración con la Fundación WWOX en este momento cobra una especial importancia. Estamos cerca de conseguir algo que era impensable. No sabemos hasta dónde podrá llegar Diego y el resto de niños afectados, pero desde luego este tratamiento es una inesperada oportunidad.
CONOCE LA FUNDACIÓN WWOX
La Fundación WWOX ha identificado terapias prometedoras que podrían mejorar la vida de nuestros pequeños guerreros y sus cuidadores. Sin embargo, actualmente no contamos con los fondos para probar e implementar adecuadamente estas terapias. ¡Necesitamos tu ayuda!
WWOX es un gen que codifica una proteína que desempeña un papel fundamental en la función cerebral. Las mutaciones de este gen pueden provocar formas ultrararas de epilepsia infantil conocidas como SCAR12 y síndrome WOREE. Estas enfermedades aparecen por primera vez como convulsiones durante los primeros meses de vida. Desde la primera convulsión, los síntomas continúan aumentando. Los niños con deficiencia de WWOX tienen muchas dificultades, como comer, respirar, digerir y muchas otras. La mayoría de los niños no pueden hablar ni moverse y dependen de sus cuidadores para cada faceta de su vida. Los niños con el tipo más grave de variantes genéticas no sobrevivirán su infancia.
Actualmente, no existen tratamientos aprobados para niños con SCAR12 y síndrome WOREE. Sin embargo, existen investigaciones prometedoras que podrían mejorar drásticamente la vida de estos niños. Para llevar a cabo estas nuevas iniciativas de investigación, la Fundación WWOX necesita su ayuda. Como organización sin fines de lucro dirigida por voluntarios, cada dólar donado se destina a nuestros programas de investigación y promoción para crear un futuro mejor para estos niños. ¡Ayúdenos a impulsar nuestros proyectos de investigación de 2024 donando y compartiendo!
Proyectos que buscamos financiar:
$25,000 – Creación de nuevas líneas de células madre para comprender mejor el espectro de la enfermedad y detectar posibles opciones de tratamiento.
$25,000 – Financiar el registro de pacientes de WWOX para recopilar datos importantes de los pacientes para guiar nuestra investigación.
$75,000 – Estudio de detección de reutilización de medicamentos para determinar si algún medicamento existente aprobado por la FDA se puede reutilizar para mejorar los síntomas de los pacientes con deficiencia de WWOX.
$250,000: realizar un ensayo clínico pequeño (10 pacientes) para determinar la eficacia de un fármaco candidato reutilizado dirigido.
