Earthquake in Venezuela: It’s an Emergency

Two strong earthquakes, measuring 7.1 and 7.5 in magnitude, have struck northern Venezuela, causing extensive damage and leaving thousands of people without homes or access to essential services.

The impact affects hundreds of thousands of people and puts more than 6 million residents at risk, including those in the capital, Caracas.

Infrastructure has been severely damaged: more than half of hospitals, roads, and transport links in the affected area are compromised.

Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to be displaced, with immediate needs for drinking water, food, medical care, and shelter. In a country already facing a deep crisis, the situation is critical.

AVSI’s Response

AVSI has been present in Venezuela since 2000 and has been active since the earliest hours of the emergency.

The team on the ground is safe, in constant contact with affected communities, and assessing the most urgent needs, including the situation of the 140 children supported through the distance support program.

Interventions are being prepared for:

• distribution of food and drinking water

• health and hygiene kits

• essential household items

• support for families who have lost their homes
