An Oasis of Peace for the Vegan in Everyone

In 2017, Gentle World was granted a land loan enabling us to secure an outstanding piece of property with plenty of space to upgrade our volunteer and visitor accommodations, and perfect growing conditions to demonstrate the possibilities of a plant-based agricultural model here in the hub of sustainability that is the Big Island of Hawaii.

In the wake of the recent passing of our co-founder, VeganLand represents a way for us and our supporters to carry on her legacy, to share with Gentle World visitors well into the future all that Sun learned in her extraordinary life and all that she contributed to the lives of those of us who have been blessed with the opportunity to learn alongside her.

Gentle World is a non-profit educational organization, helping to build a more peaceful society by educating the public about the reasons for being vegan, the benefits of vegan living, and how to go about making the transition. Thank you for believing in what we do.

This message is for Light. I hope you remember me, Rhoda’s BFF. I am grieving for the loss of Sun. I still think of her very, very often and shed tears. I just heard from Harris after 4 years and he told me of Sun’s passing. Would love to hear from you.

I found gentle world online researching vegan gardening. It is great to know that you, we exist. Peace Love and Blessings!

I have been so deeply moved by everything I have learnt & read about Gentle World. The ethos & love behind this beautiful place has been a beacon of light in what can seem like a dark & cruel world. I never got to meet Sun but I have still felt her love & compassion. I never spoke with her & yet her words touch me & resonate with me as though I had. She was a true pioneer; a spark that helped to ignite the fires of compassion in humanity. During the times when hope for a vegan world seems impossible, Gentle World, Sun & all those who created the vision we should all aspire to, help to keep me joyfully optimistic. ‘Thank you’ feels inadequate & yet the words as I say them hold so much more: they are the hope I cling to, the joy I feel in embodying veganism, the glimpse at a world Sun lay the foundations for. Thank you for bringing more compassion & gentleness into the world & I will do my utmost to follow your example in all my actions, words & deeds 💚

I was a vegetarian for many years, but veganism, while calling to my ethical soul, seemed a bridge too far. My vegan son sent me articles and videos trying to guide me gently through my heart. Angel (of Gentle World) answered my logic and logistic questions (like "what would happen to all the farm animals if we all became vegan?"), with grace, patience and humor. So, in 2012, I flew from California to GW Hawaii and ran into the brick wall of unequivocal righteousness that was Sun. Whenever I waffled, or excused, she turned those radar beam blue eyes on me and said: It's simple, make up your mind and do it. I did. In 2017, I was able to visit GW's Shangrila in New Zealand, a joyful vegan, living the life I always knew should be mine. I am so grateful that I was able to meet Sun twice before her transition. I look forward to visiting her visionary Veganland.

I’m so sad for your loss. I was hoping one day to visit. So sad I never got to meet her. Thank you both so much for all you have done. I too am vegan for the animals. All the vegan teachings today seem to state we don’t get cancer if vegan. Is there anything you can share about Sun’s experience with cancer/illness? And, curious how old she was? Very, very sorry to hear this. This is the 2nd vegan person I heard about today who passed from illness.

So very sorry for your loss! I was fortunate to have met Sun in Kapa'au and was so impressed and touched by her peacefulness, her dignity and her beautiful smile. May her vision become reality.
