Uphaven’s mission is rooted in compassion and empathy for families needing to travel long distances to or from the Milwaukee area to access healthcare for their children.  The logistical and financial burdens are daunting and are especially difficult during emergencies or for frequent treatments.  The costs can be devastating and often result in families having to make agonizing decisions during an already stressful time.

Barriers to healthcare access.

63 of Wisconsin’s 72 counties are designated as Health Professional Shortage Areas for primary care. Specialized pediatric care is an even worse reality. An estimated 1.8 million people are impacted by this shortage in Wisconsin alone, not including the surrounding regions. Many families must travel to Milwaukee as their only option for the care they need, further straining their resources.

Keeping families together.

Access is only half the battle. The journey to healing is incomplete without parents, siblings, and friends–every step of the way. Support for the entire family is not just comforting; it's essential for optimal healing for a child. Uphaven is here to help families stay together in a way that best fits their unique needs.

Each flight can cost $300–$10,000 depending on the situation, but its impact can quite literally be a child’s life saved. Not only will we keep track of the flights, miles, and families we’ve flown, we’ll also stay accountable to you and the mission by keeping you informed of how you’ve changed the daily lives of those you’ve touched through your generosity and grace.
