Goal

Reforestation of Sumatran Wildlife Sanctuary

& Care for the Earth Conservation School for Local Children

Joint Project with an Indigenous Women Local Conservation Organization

The Sumatran rainforest (Indonesia) is a key Biodiversity Hub and a High Risk Forest:

  • Only place on Earth where tigers, elephants, orangutans and rhinos co-exist in the wild.
  • This megafauna faces the risk of extinction and the ecosystem services for the local communities such as water supply and food security are jeopardize.
  • The ecosystem is threatened by deforestation, monocultures such as oil palm and rubber trees, poaching, illegal logging and infrastructure developments.
  • The Sumtran Rainforest helps regulate the Global Climate

The Sumatran Wildlife Sanctuary is a former rubber trees plantation site.

  • It is being reforested with native fruit trees
  • It provides a safe roaming space for the wildlife, avoiding human-wildlife conflict
  • It provides food stock for the wildlife as well as the villagers
  • It provides safe working conditions for local indigenous women
  • It helps sequester carbon and mitigate climate change
  • It contributes to the forest integrity and well-functioning

The Care for the Earth Conservation School for Local Children

  • 65 children from the village attend the conservation school at no cost
  • They learn about the uniqueness of their land, the animals, trees and plants that live in their home forest, so that their love and respect for the forest will grow, and already as kids they will begin to protect it.
  • The children also learn English and Circular Economy practices, such as recycling and reusing objects and materials they bring from home.
  • The teachers are local indigenous women experts in their ecosystem conservation.
  • In addition, currently five children receive a year round scholarship to cover the costs of attending public school.

Our local partner  is an indigenous women conservation organization in Sumatra. They provide a safe place for indigenous women to engage in their territory’s conservation, on their own terms, away from colonial and patriarchal templates.
