Transilient is a traveling photo and interview-based project. We candidly document transgender and gender non-conforming people in their day-to-day lived realities using only their voices.
The project attempts to humanize, educate and destroy the assumption that trans folks are solely defined by their physical experience and their oppression. To bring about understanding and tackle transphobia we aim to weave transgender lives into the overall human experience instead of merely focusing on the transition.
Our objective is to create a platform that is accessible to all people, in and out of the trans community.
In 2016 and 2017 the Transilient team collectively traveled 19,000 miles in 12 weeks. We interviewed 120 people and supported 4 team members while on the road with a tiny budget of $9,200.00.
In 2018, Transilient started a third tour in Washington state and ended in Ohio. We want to accurately portray as many trans lives in diverse terrains as possible. Transilient takes on new tour assistants yearly in order to keep skill-sharing. So, donate and help Transilient grow !
In 2019 WE WANT TO HAVE THESE PROGRAMS:
Mental Health Awareness Mini Documentary Series
For two weeks, we want to travel to 5-10 cities and interview people on mental health and trans identity.
Book Self Publishing and Disbursement Program
We want to self publish our book and send it to book shops, universities, and people for free/ sell on sliding scale basis to help spread a positive message about trans people. We want to change how we are represented but to also get it into the hands of people who need it most. The sliding scale sales will be split between Transilient and various small trans non profits.
2019 Skill Sharing Tour
Two directors and 3 assistants will photograph and film in Alaska for 3 weeks. We want to visit every state in the U.S. and have not made it to Alaska. So our skill sharing tour will be half the length of other tours and based in Alaska.
