Dear Friend, 

Mimi Shelton here. I'm writing to share about an agency of which I am a Founding Board Member and its Fund Trans Power & Joy! fundraiser. 

Trans formative Schools is a product of the love of past and present K-12 teachers who had a passion to see trans kids have academic spaces and programs that center and celebrate, rather than denigrate and ostracize, transgender, gender non-conforming, and gender non-binary (TGNCNB) identities. As a former middle school English teacher in Philadelphia and New York schools, I found that the TGNCNB students I supported suffered from bullying, isolation, stigma, and discrimination. They had little refuge or escape within their school.

I believe that trans kids deserve trans schools because trans youth deserve to see themselves represented in a staff, community, and programming that centers their experiences and joy. One that protects and guides them toward understanding themselves and the value of community. Trans formative Schools is doing this work, and it has already become a lifeline for many TGNCNB youth and their families. 

Trans formative Schools is a school of change that builds trans power and joy. We are students, educators, families, organizers and researchers co-constructing a global network of liberatory school houses. Together, we cultivate laboratories where intergenerational trans communities learn and create tools to read and write power.

We dream of a world without oppression where trans kids can just be kids who live, learn, thrive, love, and belong.
