Political Advertisement Paid for by the Tracie M. Shelby for Judge Campaign, Treasurer Robin Stevens. Under Texas law, this campaign is subject to the Judicial Campaign Fairness Act and is subject to various monetary limits. A judicial candidate may not accept political contributions from a person and non-corporate entity that exceed the following limits in connection with an election in which the candidate’s name appears on the ballot: $5,000 for candidates for district courts. The Judicial Campaign Fairness Act sets a limit on the total contributions a judicial candidate or officeholder may accept from general-purpose committees (“GPACs”) in connection with an election in which the candidate’s name appears on the ballot. A judicial candidate or officeholder may not accept more than the following amounts from a single general-purpose committee: $5,000 for district court. In addition, a political contribution from a general-purpose committee is limited to no more than $50 if the total amount of political contributions from all general-purpose committees would exceed the following applicable amount: $52,500 for a candidate for district court. The restriction applicable to contributions from a law firm group is somewhat complicated: In connection with any one election in which a judicial candidate’s name appears on the ballot, a judicial candidate or a specific-purpose political committee for supporting or opposing a judicial candidate, may not accept a contribution of more than $50 from a member of a law firm group if the total of all contributions already accepted from members of the law firm group exceeds the following limits (or if the contribution would cause the total to exceed the following limits): $30,000 for candidates for district court. The campaign finance law generally prohibits corporate political contributions. This restriction does not apply to contributions from professional corporations. Partnerships that include one or more corporate partners are subject to the prohibition. The primary, primary runoff, and the general election are treated as separate elections and each election resets the donation limits.
