Why Ann’s Place Matters to Me…

Three miles from my home is a cancer center called Ann’s Place. Ann's Place is a community-based, non-profit organization located in Danbury, Connecticut, that provides free professional counseling, support groups, wellness activities, and resources to individuals living with cancer and their loved ones. It is a shelter from the storm.

A few years ago, I registered my best friend at Ann’s Place to connect her with others during her cancer journey.  For a year and a half, I watched Deb prepare to leave this world courageously and reluctantly.  In January of 2023, at the age of 52, she lost what I can only describe as an equally grueling and valiant battle with Chondrosarcoma.

Eighteen months later, I was diagnosed with breast cancer, her fight still in the rearview mirror.  I had a bilateral mastectomy in December of 2024, a result of my first mammogram.  Ann’s Place became personal in a way I never could have anticipated. Having a safe place to talk with someone who understood the emotional reality and unique challenges of living with cancer meant a lot. Counseling kept me grounded on the fault line of mortality.

This year, I am deeply honored to have been chosen as one of the models for their annual fundraising event and photography exhibit, Through the Lens 2026. Participating feels especially meaningful to me.  Each model, a cancer survivor or fighter, will share their personal story, celebrate resilience, and raise money for families touched by this disease.

Please consider making a donation to support Ann’s Place. Your contribution will help to continue providing services to those who desperately need it.  I experienced firsthand how important it is to have support, understanding, and a community during a time that can feel frightening and isolating.

And, if you can, join us for an evening of community, connection, and celebration!  A reception located at the Heritage Hotel in Southbury will be held on September 24, 2026, at 6 pm.  There, you will have a chance to view extraordinary photographs, meet the models and photographers, connect with other Ann’s Place supporters, enjoy tastings from local restaurants, and drinks from a cash bar.  Tickets are available at AnnsPlace.org.

Thank you for supporting me, Ann’s Place, and the many people who will need this community in the future.
