In March of 2021, I was diagnosed with invasive breast cancer. Like a deer in headlights, I froze and went quiet.  For ten months I did as I was told, had multiple tests & 'procedures', multiple surgeries, 3 months of chemo, another surgery, then topped the year off with a month of daily radiation. I won't forget leaving that last treatment on December 22; exhausted in the cold, grey dusk. With my husband, who held my hand throughout, I went home. Christmas & New Year's came and went quietly. Then my journey really began.

It wasn't until after my treatments were over that I reached out to Ann's Place for help and support. Turns out that is true for a lot of cancer patients. I wasn't alone. I could face the darkness and be okay. I know a bit more now about how to help others on their journeys. There has not been one class, workshop or support group where I felt uncomfortable, judged or pressured. The stories my fellow sojourners shared were funny, sad, painful, inspiring, interesting and unique. It is difficult to put into words how much of a lifeline this organization has been for me and so many others.

Then, two years later, in 2024, cancer struck our family again. Our daughter, at 29, was diagnosed with a rare form of thyroid and adrenal cancer caused by a genetic mutation. Turns out this is from my husband's side, (we all had to get tested) and he too has this cancer. Another year of daunting tests, surgeries, permanent side effects and now a lifetime of meds.

I hope I was a better help to my daughter and husband having Ann's Place support & wisdom. Both are well but watched carefully and will be forever. Like me. That's the deal with this kind of diagnoses; it's always with you.  Meantime, we live our lives and now are looking forward to her wedding this fall, and a newborn baby with our other daughter and her husband!

All this to say, it's not just the doctors and hospitals that are vital, and yes, they are! But this organization supports people struggling with cancer (or recovery or bereavement), and their families, with so many other kinds of services - it is too long to list here.  It is a role that would be impossible for a medical center to fulfill.  So, thank you for donating to Ann's Place, whether in honor or memory of a loved one, or just because!

Your donation directly supports families in the Greater Waterbury and Southbury areas. Our models represent the many neighbors whose lives have been touched by cancer. By supporting them, you are helping to fund vital services for individuals and their loved ones as they navigate their cancer journey.

We invite you to join us on September 30, 2025, at the Heritage Hotel in Southbury, CT.  for our Through the Lens reception to view the stunning photographs, meet the models and photographers, connect with other Ann’s Place supporters, and enjoy hors d’oeuvres and drinks.
