Goal

There is a seedy, dark and corrupt industry in which horses, mules and donkeys are traded like playing cards. For profit. Of the thousands of horses end up in the auction circuit annually, MANY of those will fall into the wrong hands and be pipelined across the border of Canada or Mexico for slaughter. The industry is cruel, it is vile, and it is alarmingly unregulated. Horses may be abused, neglected, malnourished, and/or severely injured and still be brought to auction. Horses will be passed around from person to person. They will be stripped of their name and assigned a number. They will be degraded to a commodity – a poker chip. The people doing the trading will only see dollar signs.

They don’t care.

But we do. To us, they are more than a number.

The horses who end up at auction have stories, they have lives, they have a past. The horses who find themselves at these auctions once carried your children at county fairs for hours on end. They provided cheap entertainment and inflated egos for men at rodeos. They took families to church on Sundays or plowed their fields on Thursdays. Perhaps they were a pasture companion on a hobby farm. Maybe they were lesson horses or trail horses in high traffic tourist towns. Most of them had names, perhaps at one point in their lives – they were deeply adored and doted on by a little girl with braided pigtails. They serve us, willingly and with their whole being. They will loyally serve people their whole lives- all the way to getting on a trailer that will deliver them to their death.

They deserve more than that.

WHY DONATE?

The reality is that in order to rescue these lives, it takes funding. Checkbooks can change the world – and most of us individually don’t have enough to do it on our own. That is why community and fundraising is so important.

The cost of rescue is more than the transactional receipt at auction. To responsibly rescue, the horses often times need to be rehabilitated both physically and emotionally. There is the cost of feed, supplements, vet expenses, transport, training, and housing/shelter. The Gifted Equine not only does the initial rescue, but does right by the animals we save. We do all with integrity and with the animal always being priority.

Donations help to save lives at auction, but also ensures that not only do the animals get to live, but they get to really LIVE life that way they deserve.

You can be a part of the solution. From number to name – they deserve that.

NOTHING GREAT IS BUILT ALONE:

Whenever the world of rescue becomes too overwhelming, I lean into a quote by Mr. Rogers.

"When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, "Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.” I would like to challenge you all to take that a step further. Don’t just look for the helpers. Be one.

We have the opportunity every day to make decisions that have a ripple effect of positive. There is a spectrum. From something as seemingly benign as holding the

door open for a stranger all the way to stepping fully into the arena of rescue to save lives. Every gesture matters. And in this case, every donation matters.

Your donation to The Gifted Equine saves lives. Their work saves lives. No donation is too small. It all adds up. “Individually we are a drop, but together we are the ocean.” So, together - let’s make some waves.
