Who runs the world? Boards!
Many of the organisations that shape our lives are run by boards. From local church councils and charities to missionary groups and non-profits, all the way up to major international corporations like Apple, Meta/Facebook, and BHP, these organisations all have boards of directors. Working as a team, these directors set the strategy and vision for the organisation, make critical business decisions, and are responsible for the overall success and performance of the enterprise. The decisions made in the boardroom trickle down to affect every part of the business and the people they serve: the workers, the policies and procedures, the culture, the strategy, the customers and clients – all are shaped by what happens in the board room.
Christian board members have several powerful opportunities before them:
- The work we do in our day-to-day lives is one of our biggest platforms for worshipping God – our work is our worship (“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters” – Colossians 3:23). When the work we do is aligned to God’s purposes, we help to bring about God’s kingdom here on earth. Boards can use their influence to make sure this happens in practice, setting a vision and strategy for the organisation that puts God’s purposes and values at the heart of the work.
-
When Christians and Christian organisations behave with excellence, we reflect the excellence and perfection of the God who made us. The board is positioned to help the organisation and its leaders pursue excellence in their field, and to do this with wisdom, accountability, transparency, and all the fruit of the Spirit. When organisational systems are efficient and effective, this frees up workers to use their gifts to the full. And when workers are performing their jobs with excellence, they demonstrate to the world around them the glory of God.
- Boards are in a position to help safeguard their people and systems from the influence of sin. We live in a broken, sinful world and when this sin outworks itself in organisations, it can be extremely damaging for those affected. Boards can set up systems of transparency and accountability so that it is harder for sin to take root, and to minimise harm to people when sin takes hold. When organisations deal with sin quickly, wisely, and with fairness and transparency, we demonstrate God’s heart for justice and holiness to the world.
About The Board Internship
The Board Internship (TBI) is equipping the next generation of Christian board members with the skills, knowledge and experience to govern wisely and well. Focusing on young Christian leaders (aged between 22 and 35 years), interns receive 12 months of training in Godly governance and learn what it takes to be a Christ-like board member. The program consists of:
- placement on a Christian organisation’s board, with a board mentor to guide the intern through the ins and outs of the organisation’s governance
- training webinars on specialist governance topics
- conferences and professional development opportunities
- networking and relationship-building opportunities
Learn more about the program here - www.theboardinternship.org.au
The Board Internship is a joint project of Korus Connect (www.korusconnect.org.au) and CMA (www.cma.net.au) – charities who share a passion for helping Christian organisations become as effective as they can be.
You can help change the world!
When you support The Board Internship, you are investing in the next generation of Christian leaders, equipping them with the wisdom, tools and experience they need to guide their organisations towards the fulfilment of God's purposes here on earth. Investing in these young leaders will pay dividends for many years to come - the average board member will serve on multiple (potentially tens!) of organisations over many years (or decades!). Investing in this program can amplify the reach and influence of the kingdom in ways beyond our imagining.
How you can help
-
Pray for the interns, the host boards, and the program itself – that God would bring together the right people, the right organisations, and the right content to equip His people for His purposes
-
Support TBI financially – all gifts over $2 are tax deductible. Interns are not charged a fee to participate. TBI meets their travel and conference costs, host organisations pay a fee to contribute towards these program costs, but this fee doesn't cover the hard costs of the program. Extra money raised also helps to fund things beyond the core participation costs, like staffing, administration, and expanding the initiative. Use the donation box on this page!
-
Become an intern – if you’re a young leader interested in learning more about governance, apply to join next year’s cohort. Contact TBI ([email protected]) to learn more.
-
Become a host organisation – if you’re a Christian church, school, business, charity or non-profit and you have a governing board/council, AND you’re passionate about mentoring a future leader, hosting could be for you. Contact TBI ([email protected]) to learn more.
-
Spread the word – recommend a young leader in your life to become an intern, tell an organisation about the opportunity to host, get your networks praying and talking about TBI, share this page or the TBI website, or ask someone to consider donating!
Your prayers and support are so valuable and are deeply appreciated. With thanks, grace and peace,
Emily
Thank you!
