the3million Christmas Appeal
the3million 2020 Christmas Appeal
2020 - we perhaps always expected it to be a challenging year given we knew it was going to be the year that would see Brexit happen. But little did we know that a global pandemic would change all of our lives in fundamental ways.
But this year also saw the3million fight for pre-settled status holders' access to benefits; run legal challenges; mobilise thousands of people across the UK to contact MPs and Peers; work on amendments to the Immigration Bill; give evidence to the UK and EU parliaments; and put discrimination against EU citizens on the media map. We also probed ministers on outstanding questions about the settlement scheme and on Covid-related issues, including the inability for EU citizens to get national insurance numbers.
2021 will be our toughest year yet. Our work will change as the UK moves out of the transition period into uncharted waters. From 1 January we will see the impact of the sweeping changes, including confusion and discrimination. And EU citizens who do not apply for settled status in time will become unlawful.
That is why we want to make 2021 safe and secure for EU citizens.
This means supporting them, but also educating politicians, employers and anyone who can withhold vital services from EU citizens. We are also continuing with our existing legal challenges against the government on behalf of those denied a vote in last year's EU elections and to fight the data protection exemption. We are preparing to monitor discrimination and to watch how the UK government is implementing the Withdrawal Agreement.
We are ordinary people standing up for citizens rights in the country we love and call home. That is why we are asking for your help and support this Christmas.
"the3million are doing the most impressive job – both at a technical and a human level"
Baroness Hamwee, September 2020
