The Turnaway Project is dedicated to generating awareness about the positive life outcomes directly stemming from access to a wanted abortion, and the negative and damaging impacts – economic, health, mental health, child welfare –– when access to abortion is restricted.

The project is based upon a first-of-its-kind, transformational  research project called The Turnaway Study, led by MacArthur Fellow Dr. Diana Greene Foster and published in 2020. The data-driven study followed a thousand ethnically diverse pregnant people for ten years to definitively answer the question, What happens when a person wants an abortion but cannot get one?

Our mission is to disseminate the Study’s key findings, and to promote the Turnaway Play - based on the study - through as many readings and performances as possible, targeting areas of the country where abortion is banned or restricted.

Given the recent changes in our political/social landscape and the stated intention of anti-abortion advocates to further restrict access - despite demonstrably false claims - the utility of The Turnaway Study and the Turnaway Play have exponentially increased. We need YOUR help to spread the facts.

Your donations will enable:

  • Stipends for student activists to co-create campaigns, toolkits and plan activations across school campuses

  • Turnaway Play performances & dramatic readings around the country

  • Engaging policy makers with tools, resources, and facts to support abortion access

  • Recruiting cultural influencers to amplify Turnaway and get it into the zeitgeist
