The Turnaway Project bridges science and storytelling for public understanding about abortion. We use research, stories, and community engagement to help people understand the impact of abortion access - and to support informed, compassionate decisions about reproductive care.

The project is based upon a first-of-its-kind, transformational research project called The Turnaway Study, led by MacArthur Fellow Dr. Diana Greene Foster and published in 2018. The data-driven study followed a thousand ethnically diverse pregnant people for ten years to definitively answer the question, What happens when a person wants an abortion but cannot get one?

The Turnaway Project increases awareness about the positive life outcomes directly stemming from access to a wanted abortion, and the negative and damaging impacts — economic, health, mental health, child welfare –– when access to abortion is restricted.

We utilize the Turnaway Play as a central strategy to disseminate Turnaway science and stories- through as many readings and performances as possible, targeting areas of the country where abortion is banned or restricted. We support young people educating their peers through our Ambassador program. 

Given the dramatic changes in our political/social landscape and the stated intention of anti-abortion advocates to further restrict access to essential reproductive care, the utility of The Turnaway Study and the Turnaway Play have exponentially increased. We need YOUR help to spread the facts.
