Goal
The Statesman is a student-run news organization that has been serving the Stony Brook University community since 1958, before the university even had its current campus.
As Covid-19 spread, our role on campus became increasingly important, and our staff has been there every step of the way, even while we faced our own challenges as students.
We were there to break the news when our campus sent our residential students home, began online classes and mandated vaccines. We've covered the protests, the changes in policy, the human stories.
Even as we kept up the persistent coverage, the pandemic hit us hard. Because of this we've been forced to discontinue printing and focus solely on digital material. This has not been an easy transition.
We've had to reevaluate how we distribute news. Our goal, however, has been consistent: to inform.
Two staff members received a Hearst Award for their work on a film about Black students' reactions to statements of race. We've covered everything from Hurricane Ida flooding dorms to postseason bans for student-athletes, university union protests, and more.
In past years, we investigated Title IX concerns, evaluated budget cuts and monitored our student government.
The Statesman is vital to our campus. We keep checks on the school, and tell the stories that otherwise would go unheard. We want The Statesman to tell important stories for decades to come. All donations will help to keep Stony Brook University's independent press alive and well.
Thank you for considering donating to our cause.
