The Rebecca Gentry Wilson Rise Up Scholarship
Released in September, 2015, the song "Rise Up", written and performed by Andra Day, provides encouragement and serves as a beacon of hope for all who face life's obstacles in meeting their dreams. The lyrics of the song, and well as the official music video reminds people they should not lose hope in spite of what lies ahead today after one arises. The music video serves as another great example of covenant marriage.
Of course, one cannot watch this music video and not think about Donald and Becky Wilson. Becky Rises Up day to care for Donald as they battle amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and continues to do so with care, love, dedication and devotion.
However, with Becky, she has always been a Rise Up woman. The 1970 Valedictorian graduate of Person Senior High School, Becky attended East Carolina University (ECU), graduating with her degree in Elementary Education. And, then, what did she do? She returned to Person County where, for 30 years, she would Rise Up each school day to educate students at Bethel Hill and Woodland elementary schools. By much more than just the obvious care for her husband, Becky Wilson embodies what the song Rise Up is all about.
Thus, to recognize her career dedication to education, and her undying devotion and love of husband and family, the Person County Education Foundation is proud to work with Donald, their 3 children and spouses and their 7 grandchildren to establish the Rebecca Gentry Wilson Rise Up Scholarship. The first of these awards will be made Spring 2020 to a Person County high school graduate, who plans to major in Education.
