Deaf Austin Theatre is proud to announce it has been awarded a National Endowment Challenge America Award for $10,000.00 seed funding to stage, film and live-stream The Laramie Project in American Sign Language (ASL). The Laramie Project will be the first time Deaf actors will establish a platform through theater to engage dialogue, education and acceptance of our LGBTQ & BIPOC Deaf Community in Austin.
Matching funds were generously provided by the Greater Austin Foundation of the Deaf, Sorenson VRS and Communication by Hand. And a generous donation from The Matthew Shepard Foundation!
The Laramie Project ASL will serve the marginalized BIPOC, LGBTQ within the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community, from high school to senior citizens, who use American Sign Language and Austin’s LGBTQ population.
We pledge to make the Laramie Project accessible to all high schools as some states have banned this material based on a real life account and marked the civil rights and anti-gay hate laws into effect.
In order for this dream to come true, we need to fundraise another $30,000 to support the overall production budget, so we need your support.
