Goal

We, a close group of James's friends are raising funds by running the Stratford-upon-Avon Marathon on 26th April 2026. We have named our running group 'Newman's Crewman'.

We are doing this to launch The James D Newman Award — an initiative created in James’s memory to support young actors at the very start of their careers.

This cause is incredibly important to us. By taking on this challenge, we hope to build something meaningful that both honours James’s life and provides real, lasting support to emerging artists navigating the early stages of the industry.

Your donation, no matter the size, will make a genuine difference.

The Initiative

The James D Newman Award is being created to honour James’s life, character, and artistic spirit by supporting actors during one of the most difficult transitions in their professional journey — the years immediately following graduation.

The aim is to support talented young performers who demonstrate not only commitment to their craft, but integrity, kindness, resilience, and strength of character — the qualities that defined James both professionally and personally.

Recognising the financial, emotional, and professional pressures faced by actors entering the industry, this initiative will provide meaningful, practical support that helps bridge the gap between training and sustainable career development.

How the funds will be used

The initial goal is to establish the first annual award.

Funds raised will go towards supporting one selected graduate of a three-year BA acting course, providing:

- Industry mentorship from an established professional

- Support towards securing and sustaining professional representation

- Access to mental health and wellbeing support during the early stages of their career

The award will not necessarily go to the “best” actor, but to someone who most embodies the qualities James represented — dedication, humility, work ethic, kindness, and quiet strength of character.

The aim is to provide holistic support — practical, professional, and emotional — so that recipients are equipped not only to pursue opportunities, but to navigate rejection, uncertainty, and pressure with resilience.

As this initiative grows, there is the intention to expand into a formal foundation structure to support more individuals in the future.

James’s Story

James Daniel Newman was, from an early age, thoughtful, warm, and quietly determined. Witty, kind, and deeply conscientious, he carried himself with integrity and a maturity beyond his years.

At eleven, he discovered his love of acting and enrolled at Stagecoach in Banbury. What began as youthful curiosity became a calling. After completing school, he trained at Stratford College before earning a highly competitive place at the Manchester School of Theatre, where he studied for his Bachelor of Arts in Acting.

James thrived during his time at MST. His performance as Mr Wroe in Mr Wroe’s Virgins remains a defining moment — not only for the strength of his performance, but for the pride and joy shared by his family and fellow students that evening. He graduated and was respected not only for his talent, but for the calibre of person he had become.

Like many graduates entering the performing arts industry, the transition beyond university brought challenges. Despite his continued commitment and resilience, James passed unexpectedly in March 2025. His loss left an immeasurable void in the lives of his family, friends, and all who knew him.

This initiative exists both as a practical form of support for emerging actors and as a lasting tribute to the character and generosity James embodied.

Donations

All funds are held in a separate account and are reserved exclusively for this award.

As the initiative develops, funds will be allocated toward delivering the award and supporting its recipients, with the long-term intention of establishing a formal foundation structure.

If you’re able to donate, thank you. If not, sharing this page would mean just as much.
