The Bus Project - Education for out-of-school children

Equal access to education is an issue in the Bekaa Valley, one of the poorest areas of Lebanon, which has been strongly affected by the Syrian refugee crisis since 2011. Out of the 1.5 million Syrian refugees in Lebanon, nearly 40% live in the Bekaa Valley, struggling to get access to basic services such as shelter, water and education.

According to UNHCR, more than 700,000 children in Lebanon do not have access to basic education. In the case of refugee children, it is even harder to access public schools due to the current economic crisis in Lebanon and additional bureaucratic requirements for registering refugee children in public schools. 

In this context, Salam LADC created the Bus Project in 2016, which consists of a mobile classroom that brings basic education directly to informal settlements. Our teaching programmes – exclusively reserved for out-of-school children between 7 and 14 years old – include basic mathematics, Arabic and English. 

In addition to this, our teachers also organise Play with Purpose sessions – a ‘learning through play’ programme that reinforces the material learned during the classes, as well as working on social skills including turn-taking, teamwork and constructive communication. The Bus Project also includes weekly Psycho-Social Support and awareness sessions on topics relevant to the target communities, both for children and their mothers. 

For all our beneficiaries, the classes that they take through our Bus Project represent the only education that they receive. It is therefore fundamental to keep the project running in order to be able to guarantee basic education to the children of the Bekaa Valley.

L'accesso equo all’istruzione è un tutt’ora una questione irrisolta nella Valle della Bekaa, una delle aree del Libano più povere e più fortemente colpite dalla crisi di rifugiati siriani dal 2011. Dei circa due milioni di rifugiati in Libano, un terzo vive nella Valle della Bekaa avendo difficile accesso ai servizi di base tra cui riparo, accesso all’acqua e istruzione.

Secondo l’UNHCR, più di 700 mila bambini in Libano non ha accesso all’istruzione. Nel caso dei bambini rifugiati, l’accesso all’istruzione pubblica diventa ancora più difficile considerando l’attuale crisi economica in Libano e i requisiti burocratici aggiuntivi per registrare i bambini rifugiati nelle scuole pubbliche. 

 In questo contesto, Salam LADC ha creato nel 2016 il Bus Project, che consiste in una classe mobile che porta l’istruzione di base direttamente negli insediamenti informali. I nostri programmi didattici – riservati esclusivamente a bambini tra i 7 e i 14 anni che non frequentano la scuola – includono matematica, arabo e inglese di base. 

 Oltre a questo, i nostri insegnanti organizzano anche sessioni di Giochi Costruttivi – un programma di apprendimento tramite il gioco, che rinforza le nozioni apprese durante le lezioni, oltre a lavorare sulle capacità sociali come il lavoro di squadra e la comunicazione costruttiva. Infine, il Bus Project include anche sessioni di Supporto Psico-Sociale settimanali e di sensibilizzazione circa argomenti rilevanti alla comunità target, includendo sia i bambini che le loro madri. 

Per tutti i nostri beneficiari, le lezioni che seguono nel nostro Bus Project corrispondono all’unica forma di istruzione che ricevono. È dunque fondamentale mantenere il progetto, al fine di poter garantire un’istruzione di base per i bambini nella Valle della Bekaa.
