Raise three months' demining costs in three weeks!

Can you help save lives today?

Excitingly, APOPO’s 20 recently deployed HeroRATs to Cambodia, have passed their final accreditation and are now operational! Our new squad are detecting landmines in areas of Cambodia such as Siem Reap, Preah Vihear and Battambang. See recent PR here on our new arrivals.

Landmines pose a structural barrier to development and economic growth long after war ends. Every year, thousands of innocent people (nearly half of which are children, like Seila - pictured), are killed or injured globally by landmine and Explosive Remnants of War (ERW) accidents. Find out more about our work in landmine detection here.

Covid-19 has had a specific impact in terms of landmines and the communities they affect in Cambodia. During the first lockdown, many Cambodians who were working in Thailand returned home during the pandemic, and hunger due to unemployment has become a serious issue. People are now more likely to take more risks to feed their families, farming land they know to be potentially unsafe.

Despite the pandemic, proudly, our HeroRATs and human mine detection teams continue their life-saving work, but we need your help.

Our appeal is to raise three months of operational costs, for a demining team in Cambodia, in three weeks. You could be a hero today by helping us reach our $45,000 target in three weeks!

Without urgent help, injury and loss of life is a real possibility.

It is vital that APOPO continues the operational deployment of the next generation of HeroRATs in Cambodia, but we need your help to support the ongoing costs of our demining teams, which is $15,000 per month, or $45,000 for three months. APOPO’s work continues as life-saving essential work, yet we face financial pressure like never before with face-to-face events, fundraising challenges and activities cancelled over the past year.

We have also faced rising costs, due to the pandemic just so we can continue our demining operations. Rising travel costs as well as associated pandemic expenses such as the need for extra PPE, sanitiser, equipment and COVID training have put a burden on our work.

COVID-19 is an unprecedented global situation, which none of us have neither experienced before in our lifetimes, nor prepared for. It is a deeply challenging time for everyone, and this sense of uncertainty and fear is something that people living in mine affected areas feel every day, so your support is still needed.

If you can donate – thank you so much. Any amount, no matter how small, will help provide life-changing services to families affected by remnants of war.

As a human I hate landmines which create so much pain and destruction for years after a war. As a zoologist I love that we recognize and utilize the special capabilities of animals.
