Goal
Tailoring skills and income for young women in the Kagera Region
The Challenge
Across poor rural communities in the Kagera Region, many girls and young women aged 14–24 have no access to training, employment, or start-up capital. With few opportunities available, they are at risk of long-term poverty and exploitation and are unable to generate an independent income.
Our Solution
This women-led project will support a defined group of 10 young women, providing them with practical tailoring skills and shared equipment to help them earn a living. Funding will cover sewing, knitting, and embroidery machines, starter fabric, workspace rent, electricity, and basic training.
By sharing eight machines of different types, paying six months’ rent, and supplying starter materials, the project offers a realistic, low-risk route into employment or self-employment. The women will produce garments—such as school uniforms—for sale in local markets.
The Lasting Impact
For around £200 per woman, this project will enable young women to gain marketable skills, confidence, and a sustainable source of income. The benefits extend beyond the trainees, strengthening families and communities and reducing vulnerability over the long term.
