Goal
For more than 30 years, Talent Development Project has supported talented young musicians from NSW public schools to develop their craft, find their voice and build pathways towards a professional career in music.
For young artists growing up in regional and remote NSW, access to professional training, mentorship and industry connections can be out of reach.
Talent Development Project is working to change that, creating more equitable access to high-quality music development for talented young musicians across NSW.
In the lead up to AusArt Day on 22 October, Australia’s national day of giving to the arts, we’re sharing stories from Talent Development Project alumni and where music has taken them, and inviting you to support the next generation.
From Wagga Wagga to global stages
On the left is a young Nathan Lamont taking part in a Talent Development Project workshop. Growing up in Wagga Wagga, Nathan knew what distance could mean for a young musician.
“If you weren’t in Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane, it felt like you were already behind.”
Today, the proud Wiradjuri man and Talent Development Project alumnus is one of Australia’s rising Country Pop artists, with more than 3 million streams and performances at major festivals across the nation.
For Nathan, Talent Development Project brought opportunities that once felt a long way from Wagga Wagga within reach. Working with professional musicians and industry mentors helped him develop his musicianship, build confidence and see that a professional career in music was possible.
And the perspective he once saw as a disadvantage has become part of what sets him apart.
“Being regional has kind of become an advantage… there’s something about that grassroots perspective that people actually value now. It feels more real.”
Help us reach the next young artist
Your donation will help Talent Development Project deliver regional workshops, online learning and mentoring, and travel assistance, connecting young artists with exceptional musicians and industry professionals no matter their postcode.
Because where a young person lives shouldn’t determine how far their talent can take them.
AusArt Day is Thursday 22 October, but you don’t need to wait to make a difference. Donate today and help create more opportunities for talented young musicians across NSW.
