The Sweet Freedom Farm Project focuses on growing and distributing vegetables, grain, herbs, medicines, and maple syrup to our community, prioritizing the folks affected by the incarceration system. We act as a training site for young BIPOC farmers, a gathering space for partnering projects in the alliance, and as a host site for youth in alternative-to-incarceration programs.
WE FEED FOLKS
We grow and distribute vegetables, grains, herbs and maple syrup to communities with little to no access to fresh farm produce through Brooklyn Packers and the BRIDGE program, and to incarcerated folks and their families that are a part of the Victory Bus Project We do not yet have land tenure and partner with several organic farms where we have various sizes of growing plots and storage space. Those host farms include: Germantown Community Farm, Whistledown Farm, Sky High Farm, and Rock Steady Farm. Within the next year or so, we are hoping to move onto a consolidated land project where our farm project can expand into more effective, permanent infrastructure.
WE TRAIN BIPOC FARMERS
We are investing time and resources into training young Black and Bipoc farmers in the context of abolitionist education that extends as deep as the types of seeds and crops we chose. We are slowly increasing our ability to host youth on our farm as part of an alternative to incarceration program. In collaboration with Kite’s Nest, we are building a cohesive program to act as a training and host site for a collectively run program.
WE GROW FOOD NOT PRISONS
We know that access to land, space, quality food, and meaningful education are key ingredients for the liberation of folks from the prison industrial complex and the collective liberation of all those connected.
WE HOST ABOLITION & WAFFLES
Our core team holds regular gathering space for our community and project partners through the work & feast days, Abolition and Waffles. These days are opportunities to work together, enjoy waffles and Sweet Freedom Syrup, and connect over the intersections of our collective work for liberation.
