Goal
Dear friends, family and comrades,
We are a group of volunteers/ activists/ political tourists/ however you want to call us within the "No Name Kitchen" collective in Šid. Šid is a small Serbian town a few kilometers from the border with Croatia.
Presently, there are hundreds people in the area of Šid who have fled their homes for various reasons, on their way to the EU. We stand in solidarity with the people on the move (POM) by supporting POM with clothing, food, medical supplies, powerbanks and water. The resources available to us are limited and do not allow us to fully meet their needs, but only to provide a portion of relief in their daily lives, which is currently permeated by repression. The POM live outside of camps in the "jungle" - this is a term specifically chosen by POM for these places.
These "jungles" are outside the city and hidden from public view. Every day POMs experience physical and psychological effects from the brutal pushbacks at the Croatian, as well as the Hungarian EU external border, financed by EU funds. The physical injuries inflicted on POM are in too many cases beyond our medical capabilities. In hospitals, POM are often turned away due to racial profiling. Now, in mid/late June, temperatures are at 35+ °C. In the coming days and weeks, temperatures are expected to exceed 40°C.
We consider our role on the ground as supporters* of POM and their structures of survival, here we witness an inspiring level of resilience and determination. We believe it is important to emphasize that POM primarily shape the forms of their organizational structures themselves: For example, they create opportunities for themselves to bake bread, build a well, or connect to electricity.
However, in order to support a stable and sufficient (!!!) water supply or, for example, a purposeful scabies treatment, occasional showers and hygienic care in addition to their independent basic structure, we are dependent on a car.
Since the "jungles", as already mentioned, are located outside the city, the roads are often not well passable - we still have to use them. In the last weeks and months we regarly encountered problems with our cars, which soon became a very sensitive topic here at NNK. Again and again, when the car is in the workshop, we try to reach the "jungles" on foot, by bus/train or via hitchhiking - this is possible, but not with enough (!!!) water for the people.
Once a week we sell some products at the local flea market that we or the POM can't use,
in order to finance some of the extra expenses (like car repair, extra food packs & hygienic
items or a new map set). These expenses were not budgeted for by our organization
because they were so unexpected.
NNK is an independent, grassroots collective that is financed exclusively by donations.
Solidarity knows no borders!
