WHAT IS THE YOUNG FEMINISM LAB?

In the REALgirl (SERniña) Young Feminism Labs, adolescent and teen girls from different towns in Guatemala come to our offices  twice a month for a full-day empowerment experience. In this supportive space, they are able to to explore, reflect, and take action on issues such as equality, leadership, self-care, and rights. These spaces strengthen their voices and capacities to build safer and more just communities.

The Young Feminism Lab was created in 2024 as the natural evolution of  their journey with our programs, following their completion of SERniña (To Be a Girl), SERlideresa (To Be a Leader), and SERelCambio (To Be The Change). This Lab emerged from the urgent need to go deeper into the issues that shape their daily lives: making decisions about their futures, building their identities, recognizing their rights, and exercising their full citizenship.

Participants are young women ages 14 to 18 from rural villages such as El Hato, Jocotenango, Santa Ana, La Guardianía, and San Felipe in Sacatepéquez, Guatemala, all of whom have previously taken part in SERniña programsThanks to their in-depth journey, they arrive at the Lab with the curiosity, strength, and awareness needed to explore feminism through their own lived experiences, understand the power dynamics that shape their lives, and become active agents of change in their communities.

For ten years, we have supported thousands of girls in discovering their strength, healing, and building more just communities. Today, we grow our dream of a future where all girls can live alive, free, and fearless.

Why is this urgent?

Gender-based violence continues to deeply affect the lives of girls and adolescents. In Guatemala, more than 80% of survivors of sexual violence are under 18 years old. In this reality, the Labs offer tools to recognize, prevent, and transform violence starting in adolescence.
