Goal

Established in 2018, by Abba Samuel Asgedom and Abba Gebremedhin Berhe, Fremnatos charity organization is home to the elderly, mentally disabled, and children mostly with disabilities. A documentary video, filmed in 2019, is available promoting functions of the charity organization based in Mekelle (capital of Tigray). Most of the elders, children and mentally disabled were picked from the streets. There are at least 30 helpers in the shelter, out of which 26 are volunteers. Some of the helpers are those who recovered from their disabilities.

Fremnatos charity maintains an internal clinic with laboratory, pharmacy, and medical staff aimed at immediate followup to the people sheltered in the center. In addition to donations from locals and overseas, the organization used to emphasize on self-financing through baking injera and bread to deliver to the university and other stakeholders in Mekelle, as well as operating an animal farm and dairy sales among others.

It is however to be recalled that the ongoing war on Tigray severely and indiscriminately affected every part of the Tigrayan society and beyond. The situation has become grave since the end of June 2021, after which Tigray is completely sealed off from the rest of the world. Although, every single life in the region is now threatened by starvation and lack of medication; elders, the mentally disabled, and children are among the most vulnerable groups with those numbers expected to grow significantly. In a recent interview aired on Tigray TV, administrators of Fremnatos charity made it clear that they are finding it hard to provide meals and other basic essentials.

This fundraiser is therefore initiated by Tigisti and Emnet, following the heart wrenching situation at this charity organization sheltering the most vulnerable part of the society. We aim to deliver basic essentials to help sustain those currently in the Fremnatos community using our personal and institutional networks, as fast as possible. For more information contact us at [email protected] [Tigisti] and [email protected] [Emnet].
