What’s on Weibo is an independent news site by sinologist and China social trend watcher Manya Koetse, reporting daily trends in an ever-changing China. What’s on Weibo sheds light on China’s social media, dynamic digital developments, and the key shifts shaping modern China. With a strong focus on China’s online media environment, What’s on Weibo aims to explain the story behind the hashtag and in doing so, hopes to form a small bridge in the divide between Western and Chinese online media spheres.

If you enjoy What’s on Weibo and support the way we report the latest trends in China, we would appreciate your donation. It does not need to be much; we can use every penny to help pay for the upkeep, maintenance, and betterment of this site.

What’s on Weibo is run by freelance sinologist Manya Koetse, who founded the site in 2014. Since then, it has grown from a small blog into an internationally well-read news source, that is frequently cited by mainstream media outlets.

It's not easy for one person alone to run an independent news blog that now receives nearly 300,000 visits per month. In order to keep the site going and continue to bring you fresh & free content, we really need your help.

Maybe our articles have helped your research, perhaps you like to read our perspectives on China news, or it could be that you just want to buy us a drink or encourage us to write more - whatever your reasons are, we're thankful for you becoming a What's on Weibo patron!

You can securely make a one-time or recurring donation (able to cancel at any time) through the widget on this page, which accepts Creditcard, Paypal, Stripe, Google Wallet, iDeal, or WeChat (coming soon).
