The building that houses the Philadelphia Baptist Church today was once the Madam C.J. Walker School—the birthplace of a monumental victory for civil rights. In 1948, Black families in Merriam bravely organized the "Walker Walkouts;" protesting the segregation of a brand new school built in the district leaving the black students in the deteriorating walker school. This led to a landmark Kansas Supreme Court case that helped pave the way for Brown v. Board of Education. Today, this historic site stands as a powerful symbol of resilience, faith, and grassroots activism.
