Goal
I am Albert Juma, a Congolese refugee living in Kyangwali Refugee Settlement. I was born on February 11, 1998, in Ishasha village, Rutshuru district, D.R. Congo, into a family of four. I am the second-born and hold a Bachelor's degree. I am the Founder and CEO of YOBAC Organization Limited, a community-based non-profit organization established in 2016. YOBAC aims to provide access to quality education for children from the Democratic Republic of Congo and other countries currently residing in Kyangwali Refugee Settlement.
According to UNHCR Uganda, the number of refugees in the settlement has risen to 125,039, with 81% being women and children, and 19% youth aged between 15-24 years. Unfortunately, only 33% of these refugees have access to education. To address this pressing issue, YOBAC started a private school to offer quality education to refugee children.
Currently, we operate a Nursery and Primary School, which began in early 2022, serving 500 children from Kindergarten to Primary 7. We have employed 20 young people to support this initiative.
You can view pictures of our school over the years on our Facebook page: Youth Organization for Building African Communities (YOBAC).
This project has been supported by local partner organizations, which provided a stipend of $100 per caregiver/teacher per month for 18 months. However, the contract has ended, and our proposal for renewed funding was not accepted due to shifting priorities. We are now facing challenges in paying stipends for our 20 employees from October to December 2024, which amounts to $6,000. This funding will help us maintain our operations until the end of the academic year in December 2024, by which time we hope to secure new funding.
Thank you in advance for your support!
