We have supported LGBTQIA+ individuals on their path to safety, and we are not stopping. Since launching this campaign, 150 donors have contributed over €7,000 -- every cent going directly to the people named here.
Our next goal: 250 monthly donors at €10 or $10 each. That gives us the stability to support 10 individuals at the same time, consistently, for as long as they need us.
For many of us, the word "home" evokes a sense of safety. But for a young person realizing they are gay or trans in a society governed by strict apostasy laws, home is often the most dangerous place on earth. In these environments, the threat of violence doesn't come from a stranger in an alleyway; it comes from a father, a brother, or a neighbor.
When family becomes the persecutor, the isolation is absolute. This is the reality for the hundreds of LGBTQIA+ freethinkers who reach out to Freethinkers International every year. They are not just seeking a new country; they are seeking the right to exist without a target on their backs.
A World That Criminalizes Love
The statistics are a sobering reminder of why our work is a matter of life and death. Today, 12 nations maintain the death penalty for consensual same-sex acts, while over 60 countries impose heavy prison sentences. Beyond the courtroom, "honor-based" violence remains a rampant, informal execution method used by families to "cleanse" their reputation.
Because LGBTQIA+ individuals are often cast out by their families first, they arrive at our virtual doorstep with nothing. No savings, no support network, and no safety net. This is why we see a disproportionate surge in emergency requests from this community. They are running for their lives, often with only the clothes on their backs.
Faces of Resilience
Your support today goes directly to individuals who have dared to choose truth over a lie:
A lesbian couple from Sudan and Egypt is currently fighting for their future in a refugee system after fleeing homes where their relationship was a capital offense. Source
Miro, a trans woman in hiding, depends on our survival fund to stay off the streets and out of the reach of those who wish to silence her. Source
Georgina is currently in a race against time, forced into frequent relocation to stay one step ahead of her persecutors. Source
Amir is navigating the trauma of total family rejection, relying on our community to provide the lifeline his own kin refused him. Source
How Your Monthly Gift Creates a Sanctuary
When a refugee is "in transit," their needs are constant. Rent for a safe house is due every 30 days. Legal fees for asylum applications require steady installments. Emergency food supplies cannot be a one time event.
This is the power of the recurring micro-donation. While a single gift helps today, a monthly commitment builds a bridge to tomorrow.
€10 a month can cover the essential communication tools a refugee needs to stay in contact with supporters internationally.
€25 a month can provide a week of secure, temporary housing for someone like Miro or Georgina.
€100 a month funds the rent in several countries where these individuals are hiding before relocation.
Donations in any currency are accepted
By choosing to give monthly, you provide us with the predictable stability required to take on long term cases. You become the chosen family that these brave individuals so desperately need. Your €10 or €20 a month is an act of rational compassion, a statement that human rights and the freedom to love are worth protecting, no matter where in the world they are under fire.
