Together, We Are Bailing Our People Out of NYC Jails
Support the Lafayette Avenue Presbyterian Church-Covid Bail Out NYC Fund
As rates of COVID-19 have decreased in most of New York City, the virus is still raging on Rikers, where infection rates are four times higher. At the same time, the state is using the pandemic as a pretext to send more people to jail for longer and to ramp up criminalization of our Black and brown communities. Violence in the city jails is rising. This moment calls on us to be our own protectors.
Nearly 3,000 people are in NYC jails right now, simply because they can't afford to pay bail. By paying bail - with your help - we can get these folks free, out of the clutches of the state, and into the safety of communities. Each time we do this, we honor our enslaved ancestors, who organized and pooled their resources to buy each other's freedom.
Lafayette Avenue Presbyterian Church is honoring its own legacy as an abolitionist church by partnering with COVID Bail Out NYC. This effort is volunteer-powered, so 100% of your donation goes directly towards getting people out of NYC jails and supported once free. Because of your support, we can pay bail daily for people facing acute dangers in NYC jails and cover their vital post-release support needs, such as housing, PPE, food, medical care & healing.
And every dollar counts! Since April, over 6,000 people have donated $10 and up, allowing Covid Bail Out NYC to bail out over 200 people (so far) from Rikers and other city jails. That's people power.
(Covid Bail Out NYC is a volunteer-run, grassroots initiative mobilized to bail out people from NYC jails and support them once they are released. It is not a charitable bail fund. It is not a bail bonds company.)
