Sun Lodge Renovations Project
Sun Lodge Renovations (Ted’s Deck)
The JB Hannum Sun Lodge was designed to be a passive solar building and was built in 1978 using reclaimed lumber from a nearby farm. The original design called for a greenhouse to be built where the gear room now sits and we have always said, wouldn’t it be great to have a big deck on this building!
Today, in honor of Ted Wesemann, The Outdoor Academy’s founding director and long-time faculty member, and to celebrate his retirement after 27 years at OA, we are launching the “Ted’s Deck” initiative.
Renovation plans for the Sun Lodge in honor of Ted include replacing all 50 windows with double pane, wood frame windows, and installing two sets French Doors to open out from the Dining Room and Den onto a wide deck that will span the front of the entire building. There will be room on the deck for picnic tables and benches to hold classes and have meals. To make this building more accessible we will build a ramp that will begin as a gravel path at ground level on the dining room side of Sun Lodge, gently incline as it wraps behind the building and turns into a ramp as it climbs up the side of Sun Lodge where our clothes lines now stand. This ramp will terminate on the deck and provide access to the dining room, den and restroom.
Our Goal:
Windows & French Doors: $45,000
Window Installation: $11,000
Deck & Ramp: $54,000
Total: $110,000
Timeline:
Building will be done in two phases beginning in 2022 and will be completed in 2023.
