Student Docs for Shocks
Student Docs for Shocks is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with a mission of reducing out-of-hospital sudden cardiac arrest through placement of public access automated external defibrillators throughout the community. An automated external defibrillator, or AED, is a device that helps restart your heart if it stops. Public access AEDs are placed in public areas within the community for anyone to use, regardless of training, in an emergency. This is possible because an AED provides automated voice prompts that guide the user through its use. You do not need medical training to properly use an AED.
Student Docs for Shocks is a 100% medical student-led organization that relies on giving to purchase and place a network of AEDs in parks, common areas, businesses and other locations where people gather.
Student Docs for Shocks would like you to know: about 20% of the 350,000 sudden cardiac arrests that occur each year in the U.S. happen outside the hospital. Less than 50% of victims are treated with cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). More concerning, less than 20% of people are treated with an AED, which is the ONLY publicly available medical device that can reverse the lethal heart rhythms that cause sudden cardiac arrest. These safe and reliable devices are able to detect a heart that requires a shock 90% of the time. Further, if the AED is used within the first few minutes following a sudden cardiac arrest, the victim's chance of survival nears 70%!
Thank you for your generous donation - it quite literally may save someone's life!
