Snakebites kill or maim an estimated 600,000 people or more every year worldwide. This equates to a monthly toll of more than 225,000 envenomations resulting in over 41,000 cases of permanent disability or disfigurement and 11,500 deaths. Most snakebite survivors are children or young adults who may suffer complications that can prevent them from returning to their normal lives and place a significant burden on their families and local communities. The physical, psychological, social and economical costs of a snakebite can haunt the family of a victim for generations.
The World Health Organization recently designated snakebite as a top priority neglected tropical disease, but much remains to be done. Over 90% of snakebites occur in rural areas of the developing world and less than 5% of victims will receive life-saving antivenom treatment. ASF team members are passionate about saving the limbs and lives of snakebite victims around the world. Our mission is to reverse the tragic cycle of snakebite through a combination of clinical medicine, innovative research, and education-based public health initiatives - but we need your help.
