Bhuta Kola in Mangalore is a form of spirit dance that is performed by the people of Mangalore from December to January. Although, the origin of the Bhuta Kola of Mangalore is unknown; yet, Bhuta Kola seems to be an inevitable part of the socio-cultural life of Mangalore.
Moreover, the 'Bhutas' or the spirits worshiped during the festival are believed to be the guardians of the village, who protect the villagers as well as their livestock from the evil forces. In fact, the spirits that are worshiped by the villagers are considered to be the attendants of Lord Shiva.
It is noteworthy in this context that the 'Kola' is a kind of Bhuta worship that includes devotion, Inspiration and entertainment. The Bhuta Kola at Mangalore is an annual festival that takes place in different stages. The festival begins with the cutting of plantain and is followed by a Cock-fight, the coming of 'Bhandara', flag hoisting, an informal invitation, putting on the makeup, wearing the Gaggara, etc. During the ceremony, the people of Mangalore sing a typical song, known as 'Pad-danas'. These songs are narrative epics that narrate the genesis and proliferation of the Bhuta cult.
Thus, as it is evident, the Bhuta Kola at Mangalore lies at the core of the village life. The Bhuta Kola largely adheres to the religious sentiments of the rural community of Mangalore. In a way, the Bhuta Kola serves as a forum that celebrates the community life.In Mangara, people worship deities called Panjurli,Kallurti,Jumadi,Banta, guliga.
Though their Miracles are numerous, we are going to highlight a short real Miracle of one of the most powerful God 'Panjurli' that had taken place.
Introduction:
In Tulunadu (Mangalore), people worship a deity called Panjurli.
Panjurli has different names across Tulunadu.
Long ago, there lived a male and female Panji. (Panji means pig in Tulu). They were living as brother and sister. Seeing their close relationship, God Shiva blessed them that from now onwards they can live as husband and wife. Like this, they were living.
They began a family. Female Panji gave birth to small children. They were so beautiful and at the same time they were very naughty too. Once they were wandering in a garden. They were playing with each other. At the same time , Parvati saw them playing happily. She was attracted by their beauty. She pleaded her husband(Shiva) to give one of them to her.
Shiva could not say no to his wife’s wish. He gave one of piglets to Parvati. She was looking after it as if it is her own son. But one day,in playful mood the piglet went out and reached Shiva’s garden. It spoiled the garden. Shiva came to know of this. In rage, he killed the piglet. Back home, Parvati was waiting for her son. She came to know what had happened.
She was in great sorrow. Shiva could not see his wife’s sorrow. He said he will give life to it. But when giving life. Shiva blessed the piglet to have some divine powers and asked it to go to Bhooloka and help people to overcome their problems.Likewise, it came to Bhooloka(Earth). With its divine powers, it solved the problems of people. People used to worship it in order to solve their problems. Thus, the Panji becomes a deity called 'PANJURLI' in Tulunadu. Still people are worshiping it.
A real story about Panjurli
Daiva
Am going to share an incident with you which took place about 50 years back in Mangalore district. One of them is Holy Spirit Worship popularly known as 'BHUTA KOLA'. This is an ancient form of worship prevalent among the Tulu-speaking community in Udupi, Mangalore districts in Karnataka and Kasaragod district in Kerala. The spirits or the Bhutas worshiped are considered to be the guardians of the villages, blessing and protecting the villagers. Many of these spirits are said to be attendants of Lord Shiva. Though people in this area are well educated now and the literacy rate here is very high compared to any other part of India, most of the villages have become towns, effect of modernization and globalization can be seen in every House hold, but their belief on the existence of Bhuta is still intact, in fact it has increased. Why it is so?
Here is a real incident: In a village near Mangalore, in a middle-class family, their only worshiping deity was a spirit called 'Panjurli'. Their every activity was beginning with Panjurli and ending with it. That means, though it was not visible, they were feeling its presence in their house and around them. Such was their belief on Panjurli. The lady in the house was the backbone of the family looking after her six small children and her husband who was also not healthy. Suddenly one day, lady fell down due to some unknown reason, everybody thought she was unconscious and gave some first aid, but there was no improvement in her condition. She has no breath, her heart beating was almost nil. for everybody’s surprise, within few minutes she suddenly got up as if nothing has happened and continued her routine work. Calendar pages rolled, Children grown up, daughters got married; sons became earning members of the family. As a whole all were very happy. One day on the day of Bhuta kola which is performed once in a year, suddenly she fell down again, in front of the people who gathered for the function. Within no time her dead body turned into a skeleton.
What happened there? There is no scientific explanation for it. How a living body suddenly turned into a skeleton? People gave their own explanations to it. Most of the believers of Panjurli thought, this woman died long back when she collapsed first time. To give support to the family members, spirit Panjurli entered her dead body and stayed inside till her presence was a must in the family.
Where will these funds be used ?
This fundraiser is also to raise funds for the year it costs to maintain this worship, which includes:Fruits/Flower offerings, Bhoga, oils, miscellaneous expenses.
These funds will not only be used for these purposes but also to organize social programs such as eye camp, health camp etc.
Remember the photos regarding these programs will be produced only on demand i.e only after the camps has been successfully completed.
What we need and what you get !
The director of the deity worship has estimated that it costs 3,00,000 a year to maintain the worship.
Any amount is highly appreciated and the spiritual return cannot be estimated. Any Service given in 'Sri Mangara Kshetra' is multiplied many fold. A financial service is not an exception !
The funds will be also used in the recreation of sacred temple vessels and furnishing to be used in the holy temple.
Why spiritual temple why not other temples?
Since the common people had to learn special mantras from Sanskrit language or depend on other spiritual people to communicate to God, they started believing this,as it does not require any Meditation ,Special mantras to communicate to god. It helps them like a friend ,guards them more than a bodyguard ,takes care like a mother and even punishes like a mother,of course these are not done for free,it demands openly, people need not worry because it knows how much you can afford.
