South Whidbey School Farms
The South Whidbey School Farms program teaches over 650 students per week in farm-based classes K-12. The four school farm locations at the Elementary School and High School grow fresh organic produce for the school lunches, culinary classes, school events, and for the students to eat on the spot during their farm class. The students learn science and other core curriculum, while also gaining skills in growing food. The culinary education program teaches the students healthy nutrition while they learn how to prepare and eat the food they grow.
During this COVID-19 time of school closure, the school farms are growing veggie starts for the school farmers at home, teaching through zoom online classes and YouTube videos, and growing food for the school lunches, and the greater community through donations to the Good Cheer Food Bank and Whidbey Island Nourishes.
