Sustainable Ocean Alliance has provided over $1.5M in grants to ocean-focused initiatives in 84 countries. In that time, we've come to know the people behind small organizations with an outsized potential to advance ocean and climate health, while also driving innovation and sustainable livelihood development,

SOA Tanzania is a youth-led community-based organization registered in Dar Es Salaam, founded by SOA Hub leader Ailars David. Since SOA first provided a grant to SOA Tanzania in 2021, they’ve adopted .5 square kilometers of seagrass, planted 42,500 mangroves, trained over 800 young people, created 50 blue jobs, and removed one metric ton of CO₂ annually since 2023.

SOA has provided SOA Tanzania with a $5,000 micro-grant to fund their 2025 Our Ocean Bootcamp, a youth-led initiative designed to empower 50 young Tanzanians with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to lead in ocean conservation and climate advocacy.

Help us raise a matching $5,000 to enable the participants to take the next step after the bootcamp of starting their own bee-keeping operation.

The cost per Bootcamp participant is about $200 USD, which covers materials, workshops, mentorship, and beekeeping training. SOA Tanzania is partnering with Acla Honey—a local company specialized in beekeeping—to train participants on hive installation and honey harvesting in mangrove forests.

Since 2021, 184 youth from across Tanzania have been trained through interactive workshops, expert-led sessions and hands-on community projects. Previous fellowships have been supported by funders like the African Europe Foundation, and have helped empower alumni like Divan Joseph, who was selected as Tanzania's High Seas Youth Ambassador after participating in the bootcamp.
