’Tis the season! Charitable orgs need months to store up for winter to help meet our neighbors’ nutritional and other crucial health needs through the tougher months.
Despite relatively mild temperatures, residents of both San Francisco and New Orleans face unique challenges in the shortest days of the year. SF’s rainy season means greater difficulty sustaining shelter; traveling to clinics, pharmacies and food banks; and otherwise meeting basic needs. Nola residents only have a couple months to recuperate from hurricane season before winter, often facing health and financial challenges due to complexities of heavy rains, flooding and property damage. Temperatures in the 40s may not sound bad to people in snowy parts of the country, but if you're sleeping outside and chronically ill, it's not exactly paradise. The wind chill and high humidity in both cities also make winter temps feel much colder than the raw number, and less daylight means fewer hours to move about safely by foot or public transit, especially for those already working long hours.
To top it all off, several studies have found that people are actually less likely to give in the rain and cold.
If you live (or love people in) San Francisco or New Orleans, consider donating or becoming a Peer Fundraiser to help us grow our current programs and launch the remaining, completing our holistic approach to addressing cyclical health and financial strains.
Programs you’ll be supporting include: Shelter and Unhoused Support (meal pass-outs, harm reduction and an annual Holiday Event where we feed 300+ people in one go), Resource Pamphlets (hard-copy, centralized lists of the best local health and wellbeing resources), Community Events (mutual aid, free food/music & resource pamphlet distribution), Teacher Aid & Tutoring (speaks for itself), and eventually a Client Program where we’ll give individual families prolonged and personalized help until they can maintain their own stability.
Check out our website to learn more about our activities and goals, or our instagram to view slides on common health issues in our communities. Even if you have no connection to SF or Nola, we encourage you to help your chronically ill & low-SES neighbors, family and loved ones prepare for the winter months and make it through in one piece. The more people fighting for the health and welfare of their own communities, the better!
A very happy autumn and huge thank you from Mother Angela’s Foundation.
