The Covid-19 pandemic that is most definitely affecting you and those you love, it is also affecting 1.3 billion people in India & millions more across Nepal and North Africa. On March 25th, India issued a nation-wide shut down (with a 4 hour notice to citizens) that has most negatively affected the countries “day laborers”. These people are primarily migrant workers who travel to the cities for meager wages around $3/day for jobs like masonry, trash picking, tea garden labor etc. After the issue, Indian landlords of these laborers requested them to leave as they knew they wouldn’t be able to pay rent, yet the nation's public transportation was shut down which prevented them from going to their home villages while they are out of work. Not only that, but the government has shut down the borders to the surrounding states in an effort to slow the mass migration of people trying to get home. With this, millions of day laborers are stranded with no food, no transportation, no money and no shelter. It is not drastic to say that they feel hopeless and afraid of how they will survive during this time. Many who are saying, “we will die of starvation before we will die from a virus.” But there is hope!
We’ve come to learn that despite the largest nation-wide shut down ever, that our local Indian & Nepali partners have been given government permission to be out meeting the most basic needs of those who are suffering. Our partners are strategically placed and have plans ready to make a big impact during this time. They are asking for help financially during this time because of the unprecedented circumstances driving this crisis.
Right now, we are joining with them by opening up a giving channel for you to Seize The Day with us as we come together to support our local teams and meet the needs of the families they are connected to who are suffering in India, Nepal & North Africa right now.
