SCCF Adopt A Beach

The Adopt-A-Beach program gives residents and visitors the opportunity to learn about and actively participate in protecting wildlife and conserving coastal resources on Sanibel and Captiva.

Sign up today to sponsor a section of beach in front of your condo/community during the sea turtle and shorebird nesting season at $1.00 per foot.* Please contact Kelly Sloan at [email protected] to determine the cost of sponsoring your desired section of beach.

All participants are asked to help promote beach stewardship by following all beach and lighting code regulations and keeping the coast clean and trash-free.

In December, all participants will receive:

  • Reports detailing the results of every sea turtle and shorebird nest laid on the adopted beach, rare bird sightings, and the history of banded birds seen on the condo’s beachfront.  Certificates highlighting participation in the program, including the total number of nests protected.
  • Recognition for supporting the program in an ad published in the Island Sun.

Report sick, injured, entangled, or dead sea turtles to the SCCF Sea Turtle Hotline: 978-728-3663

As a participant in the Adopt-A-Beach Program, you should follow these sea turtle-friendly practices:

  • Comply with Dark Skies Ordinance regulations. Disorientations are 100% preventable and it is our responsibility to ensure that these amazing creatures survive for future generations to enjoy.
     - Turn off or shield lights along the beach. This prevents nesting females and hatchlings from getting confused and going toward lights on land instead of the sea, where they belong.
     - Avoid using lights on the beach at night. If you must have light, use a red LED flashlight, adjust cell phone screens to dark mode, and turn off the flash on your camera.
  • Remain at a distance from nesting sea turtles and hatchlings. It is illegal to harm, harass, or take sea turtles, their eggs, and hatchlings, including getting too close to a nesting female.
  • Fill in holes along the beach at the end of the day so nesting sea turtles and hatchlings don’t fall in and get trapped at night.
  • Remove chairs, canopies, boats, and other items from the beach at night because they block the movement of sea turtles and hatchlings.
  • Collect and remove garbage along the beach. Doing so prevents sea turtles and wildlife from getting caught or ingesting trash that can have harmful consequences.
  • Correctly dispose of fishing lines so it won’t entangle sea turtles and other animals.

* Participating in the SCCF Sea Turtle Program’s Adopt-A-Beach campaign does not imply or convey property rights to the beach you are helping to protect during nesting season.
