Save the Rainforests of Temotu, Solomon Islands (Last Untouched Paradise)
The pristine forests on these remote islands are currently threatened by both loggers and miners. Throughout the history of the Solomon Islands overseas companies have plundered the resources of the local people here, taking their fish, their minerals and the very soil they rely on to grow their food and leaving them with ruined environments, undermined culture and myriad social problems.
We at OceansWatch are committed to putting a stop to this but we need your help.
We have a number of expenses that need covering to allow us to effectively fight the loggers and miners. We are able to fund some of our awareness campaigns in the villages from grants but what we struggle to fund is legal fees. Right now we urgently need about US$7,000 right now and will need ongoing legal expenses covered. Every little bit helps. Every hour of lawyers time moves us towards our goal to help our friends to save their forests.
To ensure the future sustainability of the people we serve we are currently applying to fund a REDD+ project.
REDD+ is a carbon credit scheme that can be used to provide an income from the forests without them needing to be cut down.
This film gives an insight into why communities in the Solomon Islands do not want logging and mining. It's quite long but just a few minutes gets the message across.
In this film you can have a laugh at the Australian Miner who tries to convince a primary school teacher where we work that he offers "good ethical mining" The kids and their teacher are unmoved and maintain their roadblock!
In this short film Ruddy Oti, our Solomon Islands project leader explains the need for court action.
And in this film (in local dialect but quite easy to understand for english speakers one of our team visits a carbon trading project to learn for himself if this would be a good idea for his community.
