We need your help today
Hey folks! As you might know, I've worked for the Chicago Reader for 20 years, largely helming my Secret History of Chicago Music column, which covers unheralded musicians from the Windy City's rich sonic history, with an illustration and detailed historical account that I research and write by my lonesome (dutifully edited by my editor of 20 years as well, Philip Montoro).
The SHoCM column has spawned a book collection, concert series, WGN radio show segment, talks at libraries, and beyond. Also for the Reader, I am privileged to interview current/legacy artists for show previews and album reviews.
The Chicago Reader is an important institution since 1971 (and the first alternative weekly in the nation), and is more needed in these "one dark narrative" times than ever, plus it is this struggling freelancer's one regular gig. If you can believe it, after more than 50 years of serving Chicago, the Reader faces imminent closure.
Can you imagine Chicago without the Chicago Reader? I can’t either. But a perfect storm of sudden economic downturns has put the Reader in a precarious position, without much time to spare.
They’re not giving up though, as there's a clear path forward, but only if we can raise enough from enough supporters to make it through this crisis.
If you value the Reader and my column, and want to see it (and me) survive, please chip in now with a tax-deductible donation.
