Update:

The last 60 days have been some of the most intense of my career. We've cut costs, paid down debt, fundraised, and chased new revenue at a breakneck pace. There were moments I wasn’t sure we’d get this far — but we have, thanks to an incredible team and the support of people who believe in the Reader. The challenges are real, but so is our determination. No matter what the future holds, I’m proud of the fight we’ve put up, and deeply grateful to everyone standing with us.

January:

I've been with the Chicago Reader since July of 2020. I joined it because it was in danger then, and I thought it was worth saving.

The Reader is my dream job. I have always thought the best jobs are the ones you believe in — that feel bigger than you or your paycheck. The Reader made me feel that. It also made me feel welcome, like I could dye my hair pink and still do my job. That I could be a woman and a boss. That I could be proud of the work, every day.

My first day of work as publisher was Jan. 6. On Jan 14, we had to lay off six of my friends and colleagues. We're trying to survive. Nothing about this is easy. It's all heartbreaking.

Frankly, this is my worst nightmare, and the only thing that's getting me through 15-hour days and sleepless nights, is the small hope we can get through this. (Also coffee).

Help me keep my dream job. Help me save this place, and keep our remaining writers, editors, and operations staff employed. Help me be able to run Best of Chicago next year, and see your shows featured, and see you get interviewed. Help me save it, please.

We need your help today

After more than 50 years of serving Chicago, the Reader faces imminent closure.

Can you imagine Chicago without the Chicago Reader? We can’t either. But a perfect storm of sudden economic downturns has put us in a precarious position, without much time to spare.

We’re not giving up though. We have a clear path forward, but only if we can raise enough from enough supporters to make it through this crisis.

If you value the Reader, and want to see it survive, please chip now with a tax-deductible donation.
