ABOUT SAIL BEYOND CANCER NORTH SHORE
We provide private free 3-hour sailing excursions for anyone undergoing treatment for cancer - any age - any type of cancer.
Our mission: to provide meaningful experiences and relief from the challenges of living with cancer.
Teri’s Story:
Teri learned about Sail Beyond Cancer this winter, and in typical boldness, and as many do, she nominated herself to go on a sail with her family.
This summer, on July 16, 2022, Teri and her family stepped aboard Copperline, a Tartan 40’ sailboat crewed by a group of Sail Beyond Cancer volunteers. Teri’s sail was on a bluebird sky day with wind from the south at 12 knots. The boat heeled slightly, and the light sound of wind and wake was constant and pleasant in the background.
Teri received her diagnosis of ovarian cancer in 2017 - when five large inoperable tumors were discovered in her stomach. Chemotherapy dissolved those tumors but not before one of her kidneys became unviable and the cancer metastasized to her brain. Following surgery and radiation treatments, those tumors have diminished. Today, with a Parp inhibitor. she is currently “holding her own” but cancer remains a very immediate and full part of her life.
Teri was joined by her husband of 30 plus years, their son and daughter, along with their respective partners. She was the first of the group to take the helm. It surprised to discover the energy that the pull of the wind through the water bestowed upon her and how quickly she took to it.
Every member of the group found their moment to be with Teri as they all moved freely from bow to cockpit.
In Teri’s words -
“The opportunity to have my family - which has spread away from our home - return together for a sail was such a gift - one for which I am FOREVER GRATEFUL…”
