Thrilling news from the Ride For Freedom Team:
We are delighted to share the exciting news that we have accomplished our stage 1 fundraising goal, £960, but we are not stopping here. We are entering stage 2, striving to secure another £480 to obtain six more bikes for our upcoming Autumn Freewheel Session.
Did you know there are an estimated 15,000 human trafficking victims each year within Europe’s soccer industry alone?
This was noted in the Trafficking In Persons (TIP) 2020 report, and has been reported in the press and several documentaries over the last decade.
Many are youths, reportedly from West Africa. They are trafficked by the false promise of trials with professional football clubs that do not exist. Instead, they become enslaved and exploited, victims of modern slavery.
How it happens:
>Exploiters identify Talent
>Trials are Promised
>Talent is Trafficked
>Trials don’t Exist
>Talent is Exploited
>Modern Slavery Victims
Gordon Miller, Ride For Freedom founder, and Simon Rofe will cycle the first 3 stages of the 2023 Tour de France in the week before the pro tour. The tour will educate, forge partnerships and raise awareness of modern slavery and specifically human/child trafficking in football by visiting the Basque Country football clubs.
Our goal was to fundraise £960 so that we may purchase 12 bikes for the next Freewheel programme in the West Midlands. The bikes will be distributed to survivors of modern slavery who attend the Bikeability programme this summer. Being able to give the bikes to our service users allows them to be more self-sufficient and to rebuild their lives.
Plan: To ride the first 3 stages of the Tour de France 2023 on supported rides, visit the Basque Country football clubs to #ShowARedCard to child/human trafficking (a form of modern slavery) in football/sport, and fundraise for Ride For Freedom.
