UPDATE: Thank you to all who have donated so far! We’re inspired by your generosity & have set a stretch goal so that we can reach even more students. Thank you for helping us do more for our Read Ahead mentees in 2020!

You can help bring the joy of mentoring to NYC youth today, while creating a brighter future for them tomorrow.

In 15 New York City public elementary schools

New York City has the largest public school system in the country, with over 1.1 million students — 73% of whom are challenged by poverty. Nationally, 1 in 3 children will grow up without a mentor of any kind, which means that as many as 375,000+ children in New York City schools—including 2,200 in Read Ahead's partner schools—could be missing out on the benefits of a mentoring relationship with a caring adult.

1,000 children participate in Read Ahead’s proven and effective reading-based mentoring program

The adverse effects of poverty can have a lasting impact on children, and many promising students need extra one-on-one support to do their best. Research shows that children who are mentored have better school attendance, develop critical social-emotional skills, and are more likely to enroll in college, among other benefits. Read Ahead partners with public schools where the majority of children come from low-income backgrounds, and works closely with teachers to identify students who will benefit from our program. 99% of teachers report that Read Ahead benefits their students.

With 1,500 caring and consistent mentors who help them develop the social-emotional skills essential for success

During fun, weekly sessions, Read Ahead mentors help boost children’s confidence, love of reading, and other skills critical to success in school and in life. Year after year, teachers cite confidence and fostering a love of reading as top benefits of Read Ahead. As one teacher shared, The children look forward to reading with a mentor and to show off their new reading skills with someone not their teacher!! Every week the children get so excited...they can’t stop telling their friends about all the books and conversations they are having.
