Über das Projekt! (English below)

In 2019/2020  habe ich mehrere Monate in Guatemala als ehrenamtlicher Wanderguide bei Quetzaltrekkers gearbeitet. Es war eine intensive, anstrengnde, lustige und eine der wertvollsten Zeit meines Lebens: frühes Aufstehen, Sonnennauf/Untergänge auf Vulkanen, Gruppen aus aller Welt, die man sicher durch anspruchsvolle Touren führte – und zwischendurch Organisation, Planung, Kochen, Packen, Fundraising, Spanisch lernen, Fußball mit den Kids und vieles mehr. Trotz der Anstrengung war es eine der lohnendsten Erfahrungen meines Lebens.

Denn jede Tour, die wir führten, hatte ein klares Ziel: 100 % des Profits ging an EDELAC, eine Schule und ein Schutzraum für Kinder und Jugendliche in Xela. Nach den Wanderungen besuchten wir wöchentlich das zusätzlich finanzierte Kinderheim – dort wurde sofort sichtbar, wofür die Arbeit auf den Trails gut war: Kinder, die sonst keine Chance hätten, bekamen Bildung, Betreuung und ein sicheres Umfeld.

Meine Erfahrung!

Wie du vielleicht weißt, war ich zweimal in Guatemala. Zweimal für je ca. 4 Monate die Vulkane/Berge hoch und runter zu steigen, Guacamole aus 50+ Avocados zu stampfen, Freunde aus aller Welt kennenzulernen und eine der wärmsten Kulturen... Alles, meine Höhen und Tiefen, die engen Beziehungen mit den Menschen, der Schmerz und die Enttäuschung beim Ausbruch der COVID-Pandemie, die mich zwang die geplante 1-Jahres-Leitung des Projekts abzubrechen bevor Sie begann und nach Deutschland zurückzukehren könnten ein Buch füllen. Freunde und Familie wissen am besten: Wenn ich von meiner Zeit in Guatemala erzähle und von diesem Projekt, geht mein Herz auf. Ich werde einige Fotos von früher teilen, aber wenn ihr mehr Erfahren wollt bin ich nur ein Anruf/Text entfernt. Es ist eine Zeit in meinem Leben, die mich am meisten bewegte und nahe steht.

Seither unterstütze ich durchgehend mit Spenden und jetzt wieder, mit diesem Fundraiser. Und ich weiß in mir drin, zur richtigen Zeit im Leben werde ich ein drittes als QT-Guide die Wege Guatemalas durchqueren.

Was Quetzaltrekkers und EDELAC bewirken

Quetzaltrekkers ist ein Non-Profit-Trekkingunternehmen, das komplett von Freiwilligen geführt wird. Die Idee ist radikal einfach: Outdoor-Abenteuer finanzieren soziale Chancen.

Die Einnahmen gehen direkt an EDELAC (Escuela de la Calle). Die Schule arbeitet seit Jahren mit Kindern, die aus instabilen Verhältnissen stammen oder auf der Straße gelebt haben. EDELAC bietet:

• Zugang zu Bildung

• eine warme Mahlzeit pro Tag

• psychologische Betreuung

• ein geschütztes Umfeld und Zukunftsperspektiven

Das Modell ist nachhaltig: Die Touren schaffen laufend Einnahmen, und die Unterstützung landet direkt dort, wo sie gebraucht wird. Und nicht nicht für die Kinder, sondern auch lokale einheimische Familien, bei denen wir auf den Touren übernachten, essen und versuchen, das Leben und die Geschichte des Landes den Backpackern näher zu bringen.

In der schwersten Zeit des bestehens der Organisiation, als ein Jahr lang keine Touren wegen der COVID Pandemie stattfanden, hat die ganze Community an Ex-Guides, Sponsoren, Guides die nicht heim geflogen sind und mehr Menschen Geld gesammelt und die Familien/Kinder unterstützt.  DIeses Jahr, konnten wir das 30 jährige bestehen feiern - einzartig für ein solches Projekt. 

Wofür aktuell Spenden benötigt werden

EDELAC erweitert gerade seine Kapazitäten und baut ein zweites Schulgebäude, um mehr Kindern Zugang zu ermöglichen. Dafür wird aktuell dringend eine Bibliothek benötigt – ein Raum, der mehr ist als Regale mit Büchern.

Eine Bibliothek bedeutet für diese Kinder:

• einen Rückzugsort zum Lernen

• Materialien, die sie zu Hause nicht haben

• Förderung der Lesekompetenz

• langfristig bessere Chancen auf Bildung und Beruf

Dieses Projekt trägt dazu bei, dass EDELAC weiter wachsen und Kindern einen echten Neustart ermöglichen kann.

Jeder Beitrag – egal in welcher Höhe – hilft beim Aufbau dieser Bibliothek und landet ohne Umweg bei der Schule. Es ist ein kleiner Beitrag für uns, aber ein echter Unterschied im Alltag der Kinder.

Am Ende des Fundraisers werde ich den gesamten gesammelten Betrag persönlich noch einmal beisteuern.

About the Project

In 2019/2020, I spent several months in Guatemala volunteering as a hiking guide with Quetzaltrekkers. It was intense, exhausting, hilarious, and easily one of the most meaningful chapters of my life: early mornings, sunrises and sunsets on volcanoes, guiding groups from around the world through demanding trails, and in between it all—planning, cooking, packing, organizing gear, fundraising, learning Spanish, playing football with the kids, and much more.

The work was tough, but the purpose behind it outweighed everything. 100% of the profits from every trek went to EDELAC, a school and safe space for children and teenagers in Xela. Every week after our hikes, we visited the children’s home funded by the project. That’s where the impact became real: kids who would otherwise have no opportunities received education, care, stability, and a chance to break cycles they never chose.

My Experience

I’ve been to Guatemala twice—each time for four months of climbing volcanoes, mashing guacamole out of 50+ avocados, meeting friends from all over the world, and experiencing one of the warmest cultures I’ve ever encountered. The highs, the lows, the people, the tight bonds, the disappointment and heartbreak of the COVID pandemic that forced me to abandon my planned one-year leadership role and return to Europe… it’s enough material to fill a book.

My friends and family know this well: whenever I talk about Guatemala or this project, something in me lights up. I’ll share some old photos, and if you want to hear more, I’m always just a call or a message away. That time shaped me deeply, and I carry it with me every day.

Since then, I’ve supported the project with donations—and now again with this fundraiser. And I know that when the timing in life is right, I’ll return for a third round as a QT guide and walk those Guatemalan trails again.

What Quetzaltrekkers and EDELAC Do

Quetzaltrekkers is a nonprofit trekking organization fully run by volunteers. The idea is simple and powerful:
Outdoor adventures fund social opportunities.

All income goes directly to EDELAC (Escuela de la Calle), a school that supports children who come from unstable environments or have lived on the streets. EDELAC provides:

• access to education

• one warm meal per day

• psychological support

• a safe, stable environment and long-term guidance

The model is sustainable: treks generate continuous funding, and the support flows straight to where it’s needed—without detours.

The impact goes beyond the school. Local families who host trekkers, provide meals, and share their stories also benefit directly. The project connects travelers to Guatemala’s history and culture in a genuine, respectful way.

During the toughest time in the organization’s history—a full year without treks due to COVID—the global community of former guides, sponsors, volunteers who stayed, and many others pulled together to keep the children and families supported.

This year, Quetzaltrekkers celebrated its 30th anniversary—an incredible milestone for a project like this.

What Donations Are Needed For

EDELAC is currently expanding its facilities and building a second school building to welcome more children. A key part of this expansion is the creation of a library—a space that is much more than shelves and books.

A library gives these children:

• a quiet place to study

• materials they don’t have at home

• support in developing reading and learning skills

• better long-term chances in education and work

Your contribution helps make this possible. It strengthens the school, expands opportunities, and creates a place where children can grow beyond their circumstances.
