Build a Library for the Children of Xela

For decades, EDELAC has provided primary education and a safe home for at-risk children in Xela. But when they graduate from 6th grade, their journey often ends there, with few good options nearby. 

However, that’s about to change.

EDELAC has purchased land and completed plans for a new secondary school, where students can continue learning through high school, with a particular focus on tourism and computation careers. The building will include ten classrooms, a computer lab, and a library, the heart of learning. 

This is where you step in. Since 1995, Quetzaltrekkers Xela have been running hikes in the Western highlands of Guatemala, with all the profits helping to fund EDELAC’s programs for at-risk youth. 

This time, we’re attempting something bigger - uniting our truly global QT family of past hikers, ex-guides, volunteers, and friends to build something lasting. 

You all have either hiked or volunteered with us at Quetzaltrekkers, and heard first hand about the impact that your money makes to the lives of the children of EDELAC. The project you’ve supported has helped hundreds of children realise their potential over the last 30 years, providing them with a safe environment in which to live, and giving them a quality education. We are incredibly grateful for your support, and we could not have done this without you. Now, we are asking you to once again support EDELAC and Quetzaltrekkers as we move forward with our most ambitious project yet!

We’re launching a Fundraising Campaign to raise $45,000 USD, enough to equip the library fully with:

• Bookshelves and study table
  

• 25 computers with internet acces
  

• Desks, chairs, and classroom material
  

• A calm, inspiring reading space for 175 students every year
